I met Russ and Allison at the Holiday Inn Resort on Wrightsville Beach. They had been married in Raleigh the Saturday before we met and wanted to get some fun images in their wedding attire. I did not shoot their wedding, so this was the first time we were to meet. What a blast! They were fun and open to all suggestions, so when I suggested they get wet, there was no hesitation. The water on the island has started to cool, so it took a little adventuresome spirit to roll around in the surf. They were great and had as much fun in front of the camera as I had behind it. Here are a few of my favorites from that afternoon and I wish Russ and Allison all the best.

This past week end I had the pleasure of documenting Jennifer and Michaels wedding. It was a crisp, cool, beautiful North Carolina day and I look forward to the final image edit. The following images are a few from Jen’s Bridal session, which were taken this past June. It was not a crisp, cool day, but a typical June morning in Wilmington, NC. We spent the morning at the NC Arboretum and Jen was great, and kudo’s to her sister Rachel and her Mom, Cheryl, who assisted the future bride.

The last two days have produced some decent, early morning swells at Wrightsville Beach. The water is still around 82 degrees so the surfers are still without wet suits. Everyone is enjoying the wonderful Fall weather here on the island and it’s surely the best time of year to get out and enjoy it before winter rears its head. Hopefully any storms will stay off our coast, but maybe send enough energy so these guys and gals can get in some more head high days while it’s still warm.

Nobody quite embraces the time before and after a hurricane like those who surf. They anticipate its arrival, not in terms of its landfall or the coming inconvenience, but the type of swell it will produce. For those who are capable of riding waves of that force and intensity, its an occurrence that only those athletes really understand. On our beach access you always see them running with boards in hand toward the ocean. Very few times have I noticed a surfer walking toward the ocean. It’s always running toward and walking from. The conditions can change dramatically in a matter of minutes, hence the running part. It’s really a snooze and you lose sport, so when it’s good, most are hustling to catch the conditions when they are best. And they are doing this throughout the year. In the winter, when the water is cold, but the waves are typically larger, they still pursue their love of the sport, albeit while donning wet suits, gloves, booties etc. Now I don’t surf and while I admire the dedication, the part about getting into the water under winter conditions is something I have a hard time believing can be fun. But, I never tire of watching them, for they are truly having fun, and that is something, in my opinion, that we can never do to excess.

We were lucky in this part of North Carolina and the day that Irene was leaving our coast, I knew that there were some who didn’t mind if the waves she produced would hang around just  a little bit longer. These individuals said good bye in their own manner. So, I grabbed some gear and walked out to the beach. I didn’t stay too long, as it was still blowing stink and the sand was whipping, but I stayed long enough to catch a few images of people, who I knew, had smiles on their faces.

This week I, like most, have been closely watching the development of Hurricane Irene and anxiously waiting to see how it will impact the Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach areas. I also have been editing a shoot that I recently had with Sarah. Sarah is a summer resident on our access and a delightful person to know. I was excited about having the opportunity to photograph her in and around Wrightsville Beach. Usually this type of shoot  involves High School Seniors, but Sarah shows that its not necessary to wait until you are a Senior for a student portrait. She really rocked the session and it was a really fun shoot. These are a few images from the session. It certainly is a welcome diversion from the current weather events that are happening. It’s a piece of Summer as it should be. It’s simply Sarah.
